Meet OCWALK

OCWALK is an accessible online library of ocarina tabs, organized with love. Ocarina tabs can be freely accessed and printed by anyone, and each song on the website also features recording of the song played on ocarina to serve as a demonstration and a tutorial.

As an ocarina enthusiast, I know how amazing it is to get inspired by a new catchy song, and wonder if you can play it on the ocarina. The answer is often yes, but there are a few roadblocks from having an inspiration to actually being able to play the song you want. My personal goal for the OCWALK project - is to create a place which eliminates as many roadblocks as possible. I want ocarina to be an accessible and enjoyable instrument to play for everyone! I want anyone to be able to type "totoro ocarina tutorial" into google search, and find everything that they need to play the song.

Behind the Scenes

The process of creating the pages on OCWALK consists of a few steps:

1. Submitting the music to be arranged

This step has two sources. Our Patreon supporters can actually suggest music to be arranged, and participate in voting for the submitted songs. Another source is me personally: I am a big fan of Zelda and Studio Ghibli music, as well as music written for many videogames, so expect ocarina covers and tutorials for Undertale, Spiritfarer, Journey and many more!

2. Arranging music for the ocarina

I have a helper, a dear to my heart person who actually arranges songs for the OCWALK. It’s done primarily via an application I wrote, which is similar to STL’s ocarina composers, but also features music transposition, difficulty estimation and export.

3. Creating the blog post on ocwalk.com

There is quite a bit of information that has to be carefully placed on the blog post: page title, all of the links, the tabs themselves, and even the link to the post.

4. Recording the demonstration

I would like to give people easy access to both the original song and to the ocarina version, played from tabs on the page. For the latter, I am recording short videos that would simply present the arrangement. No backtrack, no fancy editing, no goal to entertain the viewer - just as plain as possible. Videos will also include the highlight of which tab is being played, so it can serve as a tutorial.
